Sacoyia Regazzi Ms. Stoppel U.S History 5 May 2017 Importance and Effects of the Japanese Internment Camps In 1942 the evacuation of the Japanese Americans from the West Coast was mainly because the FDR believed that after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Japanese Americans were inherently disloyal to the United States. This caused the President to issue evacuation of all Japanese Americans from the West Coast War zones, and they were forced to live in the internment camps. This caused much loss for them, and caused the Japanese Americans to have to fight for their freedoms. It is important for us to understand the historical event of Japanese Internment Camps, because it helps us understand why equality of races is so important, along†¦show more content†¦These camps made men feel powerless, and the women felt violated of their privacy. It made them also feel stripped of their civil rights (Psychological effects of camp). It also caused many families to be split apart for meals. Instead of the families eating together, the men would sit and eat with each other while the women sat alone and fed the young ones. (â€Å"From Citizen to Enemy: The Tragedy of Japanese Internment†). Along with these things, it caused violence to arise between the Japanese Americans and other races. It also created the separation of the races, which took out a whole part of society. After a year of being imprisoned, the Japanese Americans wanted to do something so they had freedom just like any other Americans. In 1943, Japanese Americans decided to enlist in the armed forces. The reason they did this is because they wanted to try and prove their loyalty to the United States as a whole. They also went to court to try and obtain their rights in the country. This caused the government later on in history to realize the wrong they did to the Japanese Americans. Once the Japanese Americans were released from the internment camps, the government decided to grant 20,000 to any of the surviving men and women that were in the internment camps. This helps us learn how the government was wrong, and why it is important for us to learn about it today. There are many reasons that us as United States citizens should learn about

How to Define Psychology - 5680 Words

QUESTION ONE Name Five Approaches to Psychology 1. Social Psychology Social psychology is about understanding individual behaviour in a social context. Baron, Byrne, and Suis (1989) defined social psychology as â€Å"the scientific field that seeks to understand the nature and causes of individual behaviour in social situations†. It therefore looks at human behaviour as influenced by other people and the social context in which it occurs. 2. Comparative Psychology This is a science which studies animal behaviour, although human behaviour is studied. There are several issues involved in the psychological study of animals; some of them resolvable by evidence and others more question whether to try to list the peculiarities of individual†¦show more content†¦As an emerging discipline, it integrates ideas from fields such as artificial intelligence, epistemology, linguistics, mathematics, neuroscience and philosophy. It maintains that behaviour can only be understood by studying the underlying mental processes, interaction between an organism and its environment influences its behaviour as well as its knowledge of the environment. How animals behave may not be applied directly to the study of human behaviour, but how machines learn maybe. Knowledge is not something that is acquired but something that is created by a learner based on what they already know. Cognitive psychology is often compared to behaviourism because of the acute co ntrast of the perspectives. Whereas behaviourism fails to address mental processes, cognitive psychology aims to create a coherent description of these processes characteristic of human kind. Unlike other perspectives in psychology, cognitive psychology’s reputation is based in experimentation and the scientific method. Its main goal is to explain how humans transform input into thought and actions by the complex and often mysterious process of cognition. Cognitive psychology addresses the unobservable nature of the human psyche and uses abstract constructs to produce observable behaviour resulting in a moreShow MoreRelatedHow Do We Define Environmental Psychology925 Words   |  4 PagesTo define environmental psychology, one must do so by considering the following four key features: â€Å"interactive approach; interdisciplinary and international; problem-focused, applied field; and diversity of methods† (Steg et. al., 2013, p. 5-6). Red Badge Of Courage Essay About Women Example For Students

Red Badge Of Courage Essay About Women Red badge of courage By: zach stevenson E-mail: emailprotected The Red Badge of Courage The Red Badge of Courage, by Steven Crane, has been proclaimed one of the greatest war novels of all time. It is a story that realistically depicts the American Civil War through the eyes of Henry Fleming, an ordinary farm boy who decides to become a soldier. Henry, who is fighting for the Union, is very determined to become a hero, and the story depicts Henrys voyage from being a young coward, to a brave man. This voyage is the classic trip from innocence to experience. The story starts out with a heated debate between the soldiers. One boy had heard a rumor that the regiment would be moving on to fight a battle the next day. Some of the soldiers agree with this boy, while others think that their regiment will never partake in a real battle. While watching this argument, Henry, the protagonist, decides that he would rather go lay down and think rather then take part in the heated argument between the soldiers. Henry, a simple farm boy, is rather excited when he hears the rumor that they will be fighting soon. It had always been a dream of his to fight in a war, and become a hero, and now his dream was coming true. Henry begins to think about what life was like before he entered the army, and remembers the stories of war he has heard from old veterans. This flashback is very effective in showing how his previous experiences have affected his thoughts on war now. It is blatantly obvious that he is afraid that he will not be able to withstand the pressures of a battle. He keeps telling himself that if he wants to become a hero, he can not run away. He must stick out the battle with the rest of his comrades. While marching along, Henry sees the first corpse he has ever seen. He shows pity for the man, because the dead man had died in such poor conditions. The souls of his shoes were worn bare. When Henry sees the corpse, he begins to wonder if his generals actually know what th ey are doing. He thinks that the generals are leading him right into a trap, right into the middle of the rebels. Henry deals with his fear of battle by acting arrogant. He acts as if he has been in a thousand battles, and complains about the walking, even though the reader knows that he would rather be walking forever then go to battle at this point in time. It shows one of Henrys defense mechanisms, how he uses his arrogance to hide his innocence. Regiment 304 moves on to battle the next day. Henry becomes very scared, but is too proud to talk to any of the others soldiers about his fears. All the soldiers are very anxious to fight in the war, and Tom and Henry talk about how they are not going to run away from war, and how they want to become big time war heroes. This is ironic, because in the end of the book their wishes come true. When the battle starts, all the soldiers get very anxious and nervous. Tom and Henry dont turn out to be as brave as they think that they could be. W hile hiding, Tom finds Henry, and gives him a manila envelope of letters for his family. Tom believes that this will be his first and his last battle. Henry ends up fulfilling his worst nightmare. Instead of sticking out the battle with the rest of his regiment, he hides behind some brush in order to spare himself from dying. He listens in on the battle, and to much of his surprise, he hears cheering from whats left of his regiment. He then takes off into the woods in anger. While running through the woods his conscience begins to speak to him. His conscience calls him a coward, and a deserter. Out of guilt, Henry runs back to the battle site, and meets again with his regiment. These actions showed Henrys maturity, and desire to be a .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3 , .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3 .postImageUrl , .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3 , .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3:hover , .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3:visited , .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3:active { border:0!important; } .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3:active , .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3 .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u2bc595de00bcd24e399ec026552cf0d3:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Randolph Bourne1886 - 1918 Essay

Nature of Taboo Words

There are billions of people living on Earth, who speak more than two hundred different languages. There are languages of different natures, such as analytic or synthetic; in any case, every language is beautiful in its way. It is always pleasant to listen to a native speaker, even if we do not understand what they are saying.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Nature of Taboo Words specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More From a mouth of a good speaker, the words seem to flow out smoothly, like a flute melody. However, far not all the words have such melodic properties. Some of them people refuse not only to use, but also to hear. Addressing with these words can be treated as a sign of disrespect, while their use by a good-mannered person is unacceptable. These are taboo words. It is a well-known fact that taboo words constitute a group of lexical units, which are undesirable to be used in speech (Jay, 1). However, despite the prohibition of such words, they still exist, function, and, what is most striking, developing in all the languages of the world. This fact obviously points to the controversial nature of taboo words: they were invented by people, and now the same people are trying to vanish them from their languages, and visa versa, while some are trying to avoid taboo words, others are successfully using them. In any case, it should be remembered that society is the only judge, who is to decide, whether a certain word should be referred to as taboo or not. Indeed, one of the main questions about taboo words is: what criterion should be used, while defining, which words are taboo? Obviously, the words are most likely to be considered as taboo, in case they are aimed at humiliation. Admittedly, as a rule, taboo words have a great destructive power; their pronunciation can offend the addressed person, make them feel disgraced or ashamed (McGregor, 27). Taboo words are definitely a tool of an ill- mannered person. However, despite the rather negative nature of taboo words, they are still sometimes resorted to sometimes. Consequently, there have to be some situations, in which the use of taboo words should be justified, or at least explained. Judging from this point of view, we should note, that offence is not the only purpose of taboo words use. Such lexical units are often used in order to emphasize one’s speech, and make it more expressive. In addition, the use of taboo words is proved to be more often observed in people, who are in a state of emotional excitement. Interestingly, not only negative, but also the most positive emotions are sometimes expressed with the help of taboo words (McGinnies, 245). This points to the fact, that taboo words have a very important function in the society, which is serving as a means of expressiveness.Advertising Looking for essay on linguistics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Due to being useful at a certain level, taboo words still exist in many languages. What is more, they are not likely to disappear. If to think logically, it can be concluded, that taboo words serve as balancing units for the normal language. Indeed, language can only exist in oppositions, and if there are common words, there should be some taboo words. Thus, another function of these lexical units is constituting an opposition to the normed language. In fact, in order to understand the essence of taboo words, it might be useful to analyze the sphere they cover. In case of English language, most of the taboo words are connected to the sphere of sexual intercourse. In other languages, for example Russian, such character of taboo lexicon is also present. However, some of the Russian taboo words originated from Slavic languages, where taboo words were made synthetically, and were used as spells. Logically, those words were to be used very carefully, and they were usually addressed to the most evil enemies. Surprisingly, in French language taboo words are mostly those, which name church attributes (Struck, 1). As it can be seen from these examples, taboo words cover various spheres of life. It may seem hard to establish connection between all the facts, mentioned above. However, there is one feature, which connects sexual intercourse, magic spells, and church attributes. This feature is their secrecy. Indeed, sexual intercourse is an ultimately personal issue, and in our subconsciousness we know that everything connected to it should not be revealed. Similarly, religious rituals are very intimate, and sacral relationships between a human and God should be kept in secret. Therefore, the conclusion to be made is that taboo words usually refer to a sphere of life, which people prefer not to speak about; these spheres are very private, and this determines the nature of taboo words. As a consequence, using taboo words means revealing something secret, showing the bold truth. Furthermore, in taboo words this truth is often used with some rude or negative connotation. All these factors suggest that the first natural reaction to such words is shame. This is the reason why taboo words are most often used by teenagers in communication with their peers, where the feeling of shame is considerably diminished (Stenstrà ¶m, 116). However, despite the often negative meaning of taboo words, some of them are not totally taboo, so to say. Indeed, some taboo words in the linguistic environment can be used with other lexical units, and as a result, they lose their taboo character. One of the examples of such phenomenon is the word â€Å"pussycat†, from which, in case of its division into morphemes, one can derive a very rude taboo word.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Nature of Taboo Words specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More In addition, taboo words, as any other words, can have multip le meanings, which suggests that their use in different situations is not only desired, but needed. As an example, the word â€Å"bitch† in English has a range of meanings, primary of which is a female animal. Thus, in zoology this word is normal, while in common conversation with people this word can be considered as taboo. Having analyzed the meaning and nature of taboo words, we can now explain the existence of such words. It became obvious that secret thoughts, notions, and actions need to be named; even if people are forbidden to pronounce some things, there still exist names for them. Indeed, deeply believing people prefer not to pronounce the word â€Å"devil† aloud, but they still know this word, and what notion it describes. A similar attitude society has towards taboo words. Even in case these words are not often used, people still need them. Moreover, taboo words reveal one significant feature about society. Their existence proves that the society has a sens e of limits both in their culture and in their language. The sense of shame, which is a very important quality, is also indicated through the taboo words in language. However, the modern world, in which the sense of shame is rejected, suggests that the use of taboo words is normal. Some words, which used to be taboo less than half a century ago (such as the word â€Å"sex†), now have moved into the category of normed lexicon. However, with the progress of life new taboo words appear, as far as it has been proved that society needs them. All in all, it can be stated that the nature of taboo words is rather controversial. Their occurrence, use, together with prohibition are estimated by the society, which both needs and rejects them. Taboo words denote secret spheres of human life, which intensifies their unallowable character. Works Cited Jay, Timothy. â€Å"The Utility and Ubiquity of Taboo Words†. Don’t forget to note the necessary information about each source that you will need for creating the References page (title, author, year of publication etc.). You can take notes using separate cards for each source or on a spreadsheet. Make an Outline Plan your research paper by creating a detailed sentence outline. First, create a strong thesis statement that will clearly communicate the subject of your technology research paper and your approach to investigating it. It will guide your writing and help you stay focused on the subject of your research paper. For example, if you are writing about the advantages of virtual reality for business, your thesis can be like this one: ‘Many businesses are now taking advantage of integrating virtual reality devices into their day-to-day work to reduce spending, enhance system security, and ensure faster disaster recovery.’ During the next step, you have to group and regroup the notes that you have made during your research, taking into account different aspects of your topic. You should do your best to find a logical sequence in them. This sequence can serve as a foundation for your future outline. Use brainstorming techniques to make a diagram or sketch of your argument (clustering, making mind maps). Write your thesis in the center of a page or at the top of it and cluster the key points you are going to make around it. Write the evidence you are planning to use under these points and use arrows to show connections between the ideas. When you are satisfied with the sketch, you can make an outline to determine the best structure to support your argument. Write the First Draft Write a rough draft of your technology research paper using your organized notes and the outline as guides. Write down the flow of your ideas and don’t worry about the proper punctuation or spelling at this stage of the writing process. Be ready to make several version of a rough draft and make adjustments in them until you are completely satisfied with the logical flow, clarity, and coherence of your text. When writing paragraphs, you should ensure that all of them are strong, clearly develop the argument of your thesis statement, and make sense within your paper as a whole. Each paragraph should develop one main idea and begin with a topic sentence relevant to your thesis statement. You are to develop the main idea of your paragraphs in the supporting sentences and give enough evidence to convince your readers that your ideas are right. Use transitions to show connections between your ideas in separate sentences and different paragraphs. Keep in mind that the information flow in research papers typically resembles the hourglass because it starts with general and goes to specific and then goes back to general again. You introduce the problem and give general information in such chapters as the introduction and the literature review. In methods and results, you have to present specific information about your project. In the discussion and conclusion, you need to discuss your research findings in a larger context. Now let’s discuss what information you should include into each of your technology research paper chapters in detail. Abstract Abstracts are written for readers to help them quickly overview the overall content of a paper. You may find it too challenging to write this section of your research paper because of its strict word limit. It is typically written last when the entire paper has been completed. Your abstract has to include the presentation of your topic and the specific research question, give information about methods that you have used, and generally inform your readers about the results and findings. Introduction The primary goal of any introduction is to catch the attention of the audience and get the readers ‘turned o’ about the subject. It should follow an ‘inverted pyramid’ structure. You have to start broadly by providing the background information about your topic and then narrow down to a specific research question or thesis statement. You should also define the key term that you are going to use in your argument. Besides, explain the purpose of your study and its significance. Literature Review If your technology research paper relies on secondary research, you have to provide a good review of the existing literature and the history to help readers better understand the discussion to come. You need to synthesize the relevant information form a variety of significant sources that discuss some aspects of the problem and are somehow connected with the major point of your research project. You have to examine the major theories and their contributors. Methods If your research paper relies on primary research, you have to provide a detailed description of the research design and methods that you used to complete the study. You should provide your readers with enough information so that they could replicate the study. Results/Findings This chapter is included in research papers that are based on primary research. You should provide details about the results of your studies in a clear and unbiased way. You don’t have to discuss the significance of your findings in this section. This section can also include some tables or graphs if needed. Discussion and Conclusions This section is usually the longest in a research paper. You have to present a well-supported argument, a critique of existing theories or discussion of your results. If your project is based on primary research, you need to answer the hypothesis, interpret the results, and explain why they are reasonable and precise. You can also explain how your findings are related to the previous research that was discussed in the literature review. In the conclusion, you need to reinforce the major claim and explain why it is significant. You can also give some recommendations for further research based on your findings. References No academic paper can be complete without the list of references. You should make a list of all academic sources that you used for writing your technology research paper. The format of this page should match the style that you used in the text of your paper according to the guidelines provided by your instructor. When you have written your first draft, you have to put it aside and take a break for a while. Then you need to revise your draft to improve the content and the logic. You may need to delete some sentences or paragraphs, rearrange your paragraphs, and add some new information to make your explanation clear to your readers. You may also need to review some of your documentation. Editing and Proofreading Tips from Our Writing Experts While editing, you should first look at your technology research paper at the paragraph level and check transitions between them. Then you should concentrate on separate sentences; A good idea is to read your research paper out loud. In this way, you may notice when a sentence sounds somehow â€Å"off† to you and needs to be changed; While proofreading, you should focus on the style of your research paper and check grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Don’t rely on grammar and spelling checkers. Instead, you should use a grammar book, a thesaurus for synonyms, and a good dictionary for correct spelling.
